A busy end of term!
We were very busy right up until the end of term. We went on a lovely trip to Harewood House to do some exciting Christmas and winter activities. We made fantastic winding mechanisms in our Design Technology work AND we performed a super Christmas concert: the Very Hopeless Camel.
We are going to be just as busy next year with lots of fun and interesting learning.
What a fantastic end to 2010 and roll on 2011.
Happy New Year to everyone!

Poetry Week
We had an excellent poetry week last week. We read lots of poems in the classroom and some children even learned poems by heart. On Thursday we had a whole school 'poetry marathon' in the library - we made sure that there was someone reading poetry every minute of the day. It was lots of fun! On Friday we had a special assembly when each class performed its own poem and some children and adults read poems too. What a lovely week!

Welcome to our Year 2 blog
We will be using this blog to share the fantastic work we have been doing with you. Feel free to leave comments!
We have had a great start to the term. The children have worked so hard and have settled in really well.
Here is some of the work we have been doing so far.
Snails
We have been having lots of fun with snails in science.
'We had an investigation to see what the snails like to eat. They had lettuce, basil and mint. Lettuce was their favourite food'.
Florence Nightingale
We have been learning about Florence Nightingale. We have done some brilliant role-play, safely found out about her on the Internet and done some fantastic letter writing.
Maybe you could ask your child to answer these questions:
Who was Florence Nightingale?
Why do we remember her?
Why is she called 'The lady with the lamp'?

Featherbank World Sports Week
What an excellent week we have just had! All the children in school were split into 6 teams (France, Greece, Australia, USA, South Africa and Mexico) and they completed lots of team activities such as flag making, learning about their country and tasting food from their country. On Friday we held our World Sports Day and children from each team competed in races to find out which team would be the winner.
Congratulations to the Australia team!
All the children had a super time. They enjoyed working with children from different classes and they learned lots of valuable lessons about taking part and being great sports people. Well done to everyone!

Mexican Masks
Mexican Masks
We have had lots of fun designing and making our Mexican Masks. Class 2 have done some writing about their masks:
This week we made Mexican masks. It was really fun.

We got a balloon and put lots of paper on it. It took us a while. Then we had to paint our base colour and then we did our design.
By Haider and Alex
Making paper mache was a sticky job. We put layers of newspaper on a balloon. We used glue, newspaper, balloons, paint and glue sticks. We made Mexican masks because we were learning about Mexico. We really liked it. We had lots of fun.

Money Week
We had a great time during Money Week. We learned about why saving money is important as well as why some things that we buy are 'needs' and some are 'luxuries'. We designed money boxes and we also held a whole school competition for who could design the best new money note.

We also had a visit from a lady who works in a bank and she bought in some real money for us to look carefully at. She talked to us about what banks do and how grown ups can look after their money.
During the week Class 1 and 2 made and decorated items such as bookmarks, candles, bracelets and mini mugs. On Friday we held a sale for parents and they came and bought our items. We now need to pay some money back for our raw materials and work out if we have made a profit!

Penguin Week
We had a fantastic 'Penguin Week' last week! We worked with an artist to create penguin pictures, we sang penguin songs, we learned loads of facts about penguins and we even had a special day on Friday where we all dressed as penguins and took part in a 'penguin parade'.
It was lots of fun!
