Design Technology: Winding Mechanisms

Year 2 super designers have been hard at work recently. Have a look at our lovely winter themed winding mechanisms.

Can you remember the names of the different parts of the mechanism?

What did you like best about making yours?

Volcano eruptions in Horsforth!

As part of our work about natural hazards, all of the children in Year 2 made volcanoes in their classrooms - just look what happened when they erupted!

Can you remember how we made the volcanoes?

How did we make them erupt?

Lynne Chapman, author and illustrator

What a brilliant morning we had at Featherbank today!

Year 2 and Year 1 met a very special visitor.....

Lynne Chapman is an author and illustrator and she came to school to show us how she draws her brilliant pictures. She also read us two of her books, taught us a song about a dragon and let us have a go at being illustrators too!

She answered some great questions about how she became an author and illustrator and where she gets her ideas from.

We are VERY excited that she has left us with THREE signed drawings of characters from her books; these are going to be framed to hang in our library when it has been refurbished.

Thank you Lynne, we hope you will come and see us again!

Do you have a message for Lynne?

What would you tell someone about her visit to our school?

The Big Draw 2012

THE BIG DRAW!

What a brilliant day we had today!

It was time for The Big Draw again at Featherbank and this year we have learned about the artist Paul Klee. Did you know that he taught himself to paint with BOTH hands?

Did you learn a lot? What did you enjoy doing the most? Please leave a comment to tell us what you enjoyed!

      Florence Nightingale
In history we have been finding out about who Florence Nightingale was and why we remember her. We have used the Internet and books to find out lots of information about her life. Everybody enjoyed our Florence Nightingale role-play areas. We hope you like our photographs!

Bramley Fall Woods

We had a fantastic trip to Bramley Fall Woods. We really enjoyed collecting leaves, acorns and other interesting things. The afternoon was spent looking closely at all the wonderful things we had collected. We made leaf prints, did some leaf rubbings, used magnifying glasses to look at the things in more detail and we even had a competition to see who found the smallest and largest leaves.

What did you enjoy about the trip?

Do you know a poem by heart?

What about your mum or dad, or one of your grandparents - did they learn a poem when they were little that they can still remember now?

Why not ask them!

Next week is Children's Book Week and on Thursday 4th October we will be celebrating National Poetry Day. We're hoping you will try to learn a poem and then come to school and perform it for your class.

There will be a special assembly on Thursday when we will hear poem performers from every class - will YOU be a Year 2 poetry star?

Do you have a favourite poem? Why not tell us on the blog?

Friday 14 September 2012

Have you read a GREAT book lately?

Don't forget to tell us about it!!

It's a good idea to recommend a book you have really enjoyed to your friends.

How can you do this?
  • Tell them!
  • Bring the book to school to show it to the class.
  • Write down the title and the name of the author.
  • Write a blog post and put your recommendation on here!

We can't wait to share your favourite books!

Our lovely cooks at Featherbank made us a fantastic Mexican meal this week. They knew we were learning about Mexico and they thought it would be nice to help us with our learning. It was delicious! If you have school dinner, what was your favourite?
